Ajay Devgan, whose birth name is Vishal, is originally from Punjab. His father is Veeru Devgan, an actor. His cousin, Anil Devgan, is a film director in Bollywood. He is a graduate of Silver Beach High School in Juhu and Mithibai College. Ajay Devgan married the successful actress Kajol. They have one daughter, Nysa Devgan.
Ajay was exposed to films at a very early age. He accompanied his father on several occasions to film set-ups and shooting schedules. At his age, he must have been impressed by the stunts his father directed. So, when he grew up and entered films, Ajay did some hair-raising stunts in his films.
His debut film Phool Aur Kaante, where he played opposite Amrish Puri, won him a Filmfare Best Debut Award. Though his earlier movies were of action genre, he broke this trend after starring in the comedy Ishq in 1997.
Fans and critics alike were impressed with his superb performances in movies like Company, 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. Recently he has worked in successful films like Kaal, Golmaal and played the title role in the critically acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello titled Omkara.
One of the key elements for Ajay success is his extremely profound eyes which manage to talk without words. In the working place, Ajay, as it would be expected is extremely professional and organized. When it comes to a shooting, he pays special interest in the technicalities of the process. Govind Nihalani, director of 'Thakshak', feels that Ajay is a great person to work with, he admits that at the beginning he didn't have to much faith, yet once he got to know him, his attitude changed. He feels that Ajay is one of the most talented actors for the industry.
